Woodlot Licence W0025

Woodlot Licence W0025 was awarded to the Hartford family in 1987 and has a long-standing history of responsible forest management. The licence was transferred from Hartford Logging Ltd. to CP Forestry Inc. in June 2024.

CP Forestry Inc. is owned by Randy Craddock, Jay Craddock, and Ken Price. Randy and Jay both grew up on Quadra Island, and Ken has strong family ties to Quadra Island through the We Wai Kai First Nation.

W0025 is comprised of four Crown land parcels totaling approximately 400 hectares. Haskin Farm 88 hectares, Homewood 59 hectares, Valdes Road 137 hectares and Open Bay 116 hectares.

Each parcel contains a variety of forest values that require careful and adaptive management. These include Visual Quality Objectives (VQOs), karst features, recreational trails, wildlife habitat, neighbouring land uses and most importantly archaeological.

The forest is primarily composed of second-growth coniferous stands, dominated by Douglas-fir, with minor components of hemlock, spruce, balsam, and western red cedar. In addition, there are high-value ecological areas that contribute to Quadra Island’s biodiversity, including stands of bigleaf maple, alder, spruce, and scattered old-growth trees. These areas will continue to be protected and managed to maintain their ecological importance to the area.

Recreation in W0025

As W0025 is located within the urban–rural interface, recreation is an important consideration. Two well-used trail systems provide access for Quadra Island residents and visitors.

• Haskin Farm Trail (Smith Road – Haskin Farm Block): A loop trail through the forest, down to the beach, and back along a logging road, with Tod’s Trail branching north for mountain bikers.

• Shellalligan Pass Trail (Valdes Road – Open Bay Block): A forest walk and coastal hike over the headlands between Shellalligan Pass and Village Bay.
